Vice President JD Vance, the decisions you’ve defended and the rhetoric you’ve deployed deserve scrutiny. President Trump’s pick of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, a self-proclaimed "disruptor," was controversial enough. But your glowing endorsement of Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, paired with your scathing words for the intelligence community, adds another troubling layer.
You described Gabbard as someone with “impeccable character” and the potential to restore trust in the intelligence services. Yet, the very intelligence professionals tasked with protecting the nation and uncovering threats are the same people you’ve dismissed as “out of control.” Let’s call this what it is: doublespeak.
Hegseth: The Wrong Kind of Disruptor
Hegseth’s confirmation as Secretary of Defense signals chaos, not reform. Branding someone as a “disruptor” sounds appealing if change is needed, but disruption for its own sake—without strategy or purpose—is a recipe for instability. Your defense of Hegseth as someone necessary to shake up the Department of Defense ignores the risks of placing someone more focused on ideology than competence in such a critical role.
Gabbard: Unqualified and Misaligned
Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination to lead the intelligence community is equally problematic. While her military service is commendable, it does not equate to the expertise needed to oversee the vast and complex U.S. intelligence apparatus. Her past as a chameleon and her limited experience with intelligence operations raise serious questions about her suitability for the role.
More troubling, however, is your attack on the intelligence community itself. Labeling them as “out of control” and accusing them of “weaponizing our political system” undermines trust in the very institutions designed to protect national security. This kind of rhetoric erodes public confidence and fuels divisions that benefit authoritarian regimes like Russia’s.
Putin’s Shadow Looms
The intelligence community knows what you and your boss are up to. They are well aware of the tacit alignment between Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and Putin’s agenda. While you deflect and point fingers, the pattern is clear: a weakening of democratic institutions, a cozying up to authoritarian leaders, and an erosion of alliances that have kept the West strong.
Your rhetoric does more than just insult hardworking professionals—it aids those who seek to undermine democracy. By attacking the intelligence community, you embolden those who thrive on chaos and division.
Enough Doublespeak
Mr. Vice President, the American people deserve honesty and integrity from their leaders, not doublespeak and deflection. Hegseth’s disruptive attitude and Gabbard’s unqualified and dangerous nomination are not the solutions this country needs. And your attacks on the intelligence community serve only to sow distrust and weaken the nation’s defenses.
If you truly value national security, start by respecting those who work tirelessly to protect it. Stop defending the indefensible, and remember that history will judge your actions—and your words.
