Murkowski is the Smartest GOP Senator, and That’s a Problem

Lisa Murkowski is, by most measures, the sharpest, most capable Republican senator left in Washington. And yet—let’s be clear—if John McCain were still alive, she wouldn’t be qualified to wipe his ass.

Her record over the past few months makes the case. With the Trump–Putin summit set for her own state, Murkowski’s public line has been a masterclass in empty optics—praising Alaska as a “venue for world leaders to forge agreements” while ignoring that the talks are built on territorial concessions Ukraine has already rejected outright. This is not thoughtful; it’s window dressing for a Kremlin-serving White House.

Look at her “Supporting Ukraine Act of 2025.” It is a bill sold as a tool to give President Trump more “leverage” over Putin—legislating not for Ukraine’s survival, but for Trump’s narrative. And before that, she cast the decisive “aye” vote for the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” the administration’s ideological omnibus, after attempting to secure Alaska-specific sweeteners. Each time, she delivered exactly what the machine needed.

If this is the GOP’s best, it tells you everything about the rest. This GOP Senate isn’t just dysfunctional—it’s actively producing the smartest Republicans as enablers. And if Murkowski represents the high-water mark, the chamber’s intellectual tide went out the window a long time ago.
