Stop Believing Elon: DOGE Was a 1984-Style Lie from the Very Start

Elon Musk is a known liar and a Russian-aligned actor. That fact alone should dismantle any belief that his public statements about DOGE—the so-called Department of Government Efficiency—were ever sincere. People taking him at his word about the purpose of DOGE are making a category error. Musk never believed what he said about DOGE. It was always a lie. To pretend that he failed when DOGE has actually succeeded in its true, covert purpose is foolish in the extreme.

From the beginning, DOGE was not about increasing government efficiency. That was the cover story, the polished façade for public consumption. Its true goal was to kneecap the administrative state under the pretense of reform. It was strategic sabotage, masquerading as innovation. The name itself—reminiscent of a meme coin—was part of the farce, a knowing wink to the initiated that the department was never meant to be taken seriously, except by the people it would quietly destroy.

Musk’s genius—if one can call it that—is in cloaking demolition in the language of disruption. Like his other endeavors, DOGE operated with the language of progress but functioned with the logic of ruin. Essential staff were purged. Budgets slashed. Oversight mechanisms dismantled. All while the public was sold a tale of streamlining and modernization. The result was not leaner government—it was weaker government, less able to resist autocratic overreach.

DOGE’s real victory was psychological: it taught the public to believe that dysfunction was reform. That slashing programs was innovation. That power concentration was efficiency. These are the fundamental tenets of authoritarian doublespeak. And Musk, playing his role in the asymmetric war against Western liberalism, carried it out with flair.

Elon’s unwitting defenders, even now, point to the "unrealized savings" or "complicated implementation" as signs of failure. But those who understand the asymmetric game know better. The chaos, the lies, the institutional weakening—those were the deliverables. And they were delivered.

Stop believing Elon Musk. He’s not a failed reformer. He’s a successful saboteur.
