Why Not? Because People.

Answering Donald Trump

Because people exist, that is why...

If there’s one thing Donald Trump has never understood, it’s that he is not the only person on this planet. His endless parade of harebrained ideas — from buying Greenland to renaming the Gulf of Mexico — have one thing in common: they completely ignore the reality of other people. People with thoughts. People with agency. People who don’t give a damn about whatever half-baked nonsense is tumbling out of Trump’s mouth on any given day.

Why won’t these ideas work? Why do they fail so spectacularly before they even get off the ground? Because, Donald, people exist. That’s why.

Why Won’t Buying Greenland Work? Because People.

Ah yes, Trump’s dream of purchasing Greenland. Never mind that it’s a semi-autonomous territory with its own government and its own people. Never mind that Denmark, which oversees Greenland’s foreign policy, flat-out rejected the idea when Trump floated it during his first term. And never mind that Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has made it abundantly clear that the island is not for sale.

Why won’t buying Greenland work? Because people live there, Donald. People with their own culture, their own land, and their own government. People who aren’t interested in being treated like Monopoly property for you to snatch up in one of your power-hungry fantasies. You can’t just slap down a wad of cash and expect an entire territory to bow to your whims. It’s not a failed casino deal — it’s a country. And its people have a say in what happens to it.

Why Not Rename the Gulf of Mexico? Um, Because People.

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” is another shining example of Trump’s inability to grasp reality. Why not rename it, he asks? Because, Donald, there are three countries bordering that body of water — Mexico, the United States, and Cuba. And guess what? They all have people who might have a problem with you unilaterally deciding to erase centuries of history with one ridiculous proclamation.

This isn’t just some swimming pool in your backyard. It’s an internationally recognized body of water with a name that reflects its geographic and cultural significance. Trying to rename it to stroke your own ego isn’t just dumb — it’s offensive to everyone else involved. But, of course, Trump doesn’t see the “everyone else” part. In his mind, the only opinion that matters is his own.

Why Don’t We Do Any of the Hairbrained Ideas Trump Comes Up With? Because People, Donald.

Every single one of Trump’s most outrageous ideas has failed for the same reason: other people exist. People who think differently, act independently, and have their own interests, rights, and voices. The world is not a blank canvas for Trump to scribble on. It’s a complex web of humanity, and every decision he tries to bulldoze through crashes into the brick wall of reality.

Why didn’t NATO collapse when Trump tried to undermine it? Because the member nations, made up of actual people, refused to let it happen. Why hasn’t his trade war with China yielded the results he bragged about? Because people on both sides of that conflict have their own priorities and strategies. Why didn’t the Capitol insurrection succeed? Because millions of people stood up and said, “Not on our watch.”

Trump’s fundamental flaw is that he sees the world as a sandbox for his own amusement. He doesn’t understand — or refuses to acknowledge — that his actions have consequences for others. And those others? They push back. They resist. They refuse to be pawns in his game.

People: The Brick Wall to Trump’s Ego

The funny thing about people is that they have this annoying habit of not going along with every stupid idea that comes their way. They question. They challenge. They say “no.” And when it comes to Trump, they say it a lot. Because his ideas — while sometimes amusing in their absurdity — are, at their core, anti-human. They disregard the needs, desires, and rights of everyone else in favor of his own delusional ego.

You can’t just buy a country because you want it. You can’t rename an ocean because it makes you feel more important. You can’t destroy alliances, rewrite history, or impose your will on the world without considering the people who are affected by those decisions. And that’s where Trump always fails — because he doesn’t consider people at all.

Why Not? Because People.

In the end, it’s not Trump’s ignorance, his narcissism, or even his incompetence that stops him. It’s people. People who refuse to let him run roughshod over reality. People who stand up, speak out, and draw the line. People who remind him, time and time again, that he is not the emperor he imagines himself to be.

So, the next time Trump asks why he can’t do something ridiculous, the answer is simple: because people, Donald. That’s why.
